Dhiren Babbar, Candidate for BL Treasurer

Role Description: The Treasurer will have the opportunity to maintain and assist in everything finance for the BLSA. This means you’ll manage the Association Fund, funding applications, and assisting the VPs in the funding for flagship events. You’ll also be able to manage external stakeholders to find appropriate sponsorship where appropriate. This is a non-representative position and does not sit on the Student Council.

What's your favourite moment from being a student here?

There are so many, it’s impossible to single out a specific one! Out of the many amazing experiences I've had the privilege to be a part of, I must say Freshers Fortnight was definitely up there. From meeting my amazing BL Family and sharing a wholesome Brick Lane Curry, to seeing the amazing and unique sports and societies that were on offer and making new friends at Tables, I got a insight into what a special, supportive and passionate family we have here at Barts! Halloween Tables was definitely a favourite, as was getting to know the amazing members of Tennis at our Christmas Dinner! There have been so many more memorable moments from my time here at Barts and I look forward to keep adding to the list!

What's something you've done that you're proud of?

I would have to say I am proud of my commitment to student life at Barts and The London so far. This ranges from socially to academically and through sports. From representing the medical school through LUSL tennis this year, to supporting our amazing charities and societies through RAG events at Laird Hall, to being there at Tables sharing the success of our amazing clubs, to hosting conferences through academic societies that enable students the best exposure possible, this year I have really tried to give it my all, and aim to do so always. This is further reinforced by my Student Staff job role in the BLSA where I have supported the running of RAG events, ordering of stash, society socials and Association dinner organisation. As your treasurer, I will aimlessly work even harder to support the running of our amazing Association!

What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?

I believe that one of the biggest problems students face is the lack of awareness and instruction in regards to how students themselves, sports and societies can access sponsorship and funding/grants through our various funds set up. I am aware work was done on this previously and I aim to reinforce and build upon the range of resources such as the Alumni Annual Fund, Medical College Trust and Association Fund, and also attract new forms of funding. I realise student sports groups lack funds and facilities when it comes to items like kit for hockey or equipment like clocks for our cricket pavilion for example, which I aim to address. In the long term I intend to work closely with developing projects such as the Heritage work done at Barts to embrace and continue the amazing legacy we have.
