Patricia Britto, Candidate for IHSE Junior Representative
Role Description: The Institute of Health Science Education Junior Representative will gather feedback from and represent students who are studying in Year 1 or 2 of the MBBS program, Year 1 of the Graduate Entry Program, or the FDCert Foundation Medicine year at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. You’ll work as part of the Education Zone, co-chair the Junior SSLC (Student Staff Liaison Committee), and support the Vice President Barts and The London, and encouraging students in the faculty to participate and engage with the Students’ Union.
What's your favourite moment from being a student here?
My favourite moment of being a student here is so hard to pick, there is already so many! I think one of my best experiences has been being part of the RAG Committee this year. Both helping out with and watching BNOC was one of the most unique experiences ever, and really exemplified being a student at Barts - work hard, play hard! It gave me the experience of organising events at Barts, making it the most enjoyable for us students, and it was so satisfying to see our hard work come to life.
What's something you've done that you're proud of?
Even though it is slightly cringe, I am honestly so proud of myself for just being here! In my time here so far, I feel I have done a lot, whether that be volunteering with SAMDA and Teddy Bear Hospital, joining rugby even though I had not played in years, and even the small wins, like submitting what felt like the longest essay ever and doing the SSC presentations. Getting into and staying in medicine has been incredibly challenging for me, often feeling like I am swamped with work or struggling to balance working, studying and spending time with friends. Second year has been a lot of personal growth for me, and these past two years have been such a learning curve that has given me so much useful advice and experience that I hope to use as Junior Clinical Rep.
What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?
My two years at Bart's have exposed me to some concerning shortcomings that I hope to fix in my role as Junior Rep. One of these is SSCs. Having experienced the stress of applying for SSC both here and in Malta, and having asked pre-clinical students, it's clear there is dissatisfaction with the scheme, whether that be from lack of interesting and enriching options or insufficient information as to what you are signing up to attend for 2 weeks. It is important to us that we get the opportunity to do things that will benefit us and we are genuinely motivated to do. I hope to introduce honest testimonies about each SSC, and to provide more support to those self-organising as it can be daunting to organise. Hopefully, the changes I will implement can help you make the most out of an incredibly useful and outstanding experience!
