Rithika Bhuvaneswaran & Maria Nasir, Candidates for BL Societies Officers

Role Description: Societies and clubs at Queen Mary cover a huge range of interests (over 300!) and can be a great way to pursue passions and build strong friendships. Every year, we have thousands of new students eager to get involved and the Societies Officer plays an important role in being the voice of these students. As a Societies Officer, you will approve new societies, plan and deliver events as well as allocate funding, all while working closely with Students’ Union staff. You’d also ensure that BL Societies and the Students’ Union maintain strong communication so that everything runs smoothly!

What's your favourite moment from being a student here?

We have loved being students here from the amazing atmosphere to the people we’ve had the chance to meet. One of our favourite memories was helping run the RAG Halloween maze. It was fun coming up with crazy ideas with the team to scare everyone the best (especially the sports teams!)

What's something you've done that you're proud of?

We are both student ambassadors, a job that we love! We’re so proud that we get the chance to inform prospective students on how amazing Barts and show them the culture that we have here. Seeing them through the interview process and calming them before they meet the interviewers is something we are quite proud that we got the opportunity to do.

What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?

One of the recurring problems that we know has troubled students is the information regarding funding. We aim to make that clearer by coming up with clear instructions on how to apply for funding and who to go to. In our drop-in sessions for committee leaders, we’ll go over how to write forms to apply for funding and what exactly funding means for your society. Hopefully making things easier!
