Thomas Johnson, Candidate for BL Societies Officer

Role Description: Societies and clubs at Queen Mary cover a huge range of interests (over 300!) and can be a great way to pursue passions and build strong friendships. Every year, we have thousands of new students eager to get involved and the Societies Officer plays an important role in being the voice of these students. As a Societies Officer, you will approve new societies, plan and deliver events as well as allocate funding, all while working closely with Students’ Union staff. You’d also ensure that BL Societies and the Students’ Union maintain strong communication so that everything runs smoothly!

What's your favourite moment from being a student here?

My favourite moment would definitely be winning the Comedy UH as part of the Zebraphiles last year - was great to see the Barts turn out and us beat the other med schools for the title. The atmosphere was incredible and cemented us, in my mind at least, as the most fun London med school to be at with the best community.

What's something you've done that you're proud of?

As RAG officer this year, its absolutely been creating and running BNOC. I think it was an incredibly good evening and I hope everyone packed into Liard had a great time - I was especially happy since we managed to beat our fundraising goal and raise £1,700 for charity.

What is a problem facing students and how do you propose to fix it?

A current issue I'm very passionate about solving is the difficulties societies are facing running events from not being able to book rooms to having funding issues. I think it's very important as the backbone of Bart's culture they are supported to the max and I propose an upgraded treasurer and president pack alongside better communication from the BLSA over funding sources available, how they differ and how they can be accessed. I also think there needs to be greater transparency from the SU over room bookings, when spaces will be available and a reduction in portering and cleaning costs for large events must occur to keep societies viable long term.
